May 2020 data breach overview

Cathay Pacific was fined £500,000 by ICO for data breach

In May 2020, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited was also fined £500,000 by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). In this case, the airline's failure to secure its systems resulted in the personal details of some 9.4 million customers being exposed. Of these customers, 111,578 were from the UK.

Coronavirus continued to impact the legal world in May 2020

We looked at whether data breach cases were on hold due to coronavirus

As the coronavirus pandemic continued to impact the world, many people contacted Hayes Connor Solicitors, worried that their data breach case might not go ahead. So, we took the opportunity to clarify the situation and put minds at rest. Crucially, we confirmed that our justice system is continuing to operate, that our group actions and individual cases are progressing, and that we are still settling many claims.

We warned that the COVID-19 outbreak might lead to more data breaches

As businesses continued to navigate the coronavirus crisis, many responded by increasing home working. But, at this challenging time, we believed it highly likely that organisations would suffer more mistakes and more data breaches.

This warning proved timely when it was revealed that a staggering 46% of global businesses had encountered at least one cybersecurity scare since shifting to a remote working model during lockdown.

About Hayes Connor

At Hayes Connor, we are true experts in data breach law. This is all we do, and we have been doing it longer than most other solicitors. We lead our field when it comes to understanding the complexities involved. What's more, we have been working to defend consumer rights for over 50 years.

As well as our experienced lawyers, our team also includes some of the UK's best data breach barristers. This ensures our clients get the very best level of legal support available.

A lack of care and understanding about data breach law can leave victims open to advice and representation below the standard expected. And this could see people lose out financially as a result. But, despite being the most experienced data protection solicitors around, we also provide no-win, no-fee funding arrangements. So our clients don't have to worry about costs. There are no hidden charges or administration fees.

Importantly, while we are experts in group actions, we also deal with smaller individual cases. And we understand that for those involved the experience can be devastating. So, regardless of the details, we never belittle anyone's experience.

And, because making a data breach claim is stressful enough without having to chase your solicitor, we provide regular updates, so our clients always know what's happening. Together, this experience and expertise ensure that our data breach solicitors are unmatched in the UK.
