Klarna report data breach affecting 9500 app users

The global payments and shopping service Klarna have published a statement, revealing they recently experienced a data breach affecting 9500 of their app users.

In the statement, Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski claimed that the incident was self-inflicted, with a bug causing random user data to be incorrectly exposed when accessing Klarna’s user interfaces.

Though Klarna have not confirmed exactly what data was exposed in the breach, it has been reported that users were able to see the full details of other accounts, including personal information, addresses, purchase history and payment methods.

As per UK PC Mag, it has also been indicated that partial bank details were also exposed in the breach.

Following an internal investigation, it was concluded that the bug was caused by human error, as opposed to an external breach of Klarna’s systems from an unauthorised third party. Klarna have stated that they have now fixed the bug and have informed the appropriate authorities.

Klarna claim to still be analysing exactly which consumers were affected in the breach, which suggests investigations are still ongoing.
